SMS Betting in Kenya: How to Bet via SMS

Advertiser disclosure: we may earn a commission when you join an operator through links on this page. It never changes our scores. How we make money.

SMS betting lets you register, bet, play jackpots and withdraw by sending text messages to a bookmaker's shortcode, with no internet bundle needed. A few Kenyan operators still support it fully, including OdiBets, Betika and Chezacash. You send a message in a fixed format, such as a match ID and your pick, and the bookmaker replies with a confirmation. Below are the SMS betting sites we rate, their shortcodes from our operator records, and how to bet via SMS step by step.

Shortcodes and paybills come from our operator records. A blank cell means the number has not been confirmed from an official or reliable source; check the bookmaker's own help page before sending anything. SportPesa is listed for its USSD service for players without internet, which works in a similar way.

How to bet via SMS: the general method

  1. Register. Send the bookmaker's registration keyword, usually its name or short name, to its shortcode from your Safaricom line. You receive a confirmation and sometimes a PIN.
  2. Deposit. Load your account with M-Pesa Pay Bill using the bookmaker's business number. Some operators also accept a deposit request by SMS, which triggers an M-Pesa prompt.
  3. Get the games. Request the list of matches by SMS, or check match IDs on the bookmaker's site or in printed coupons. Each match has a short numeric ID.
  4. Place the bet. Send a message in the operator's format, typically the match ID, your pick and the stake, separated by the # symbol.
  5. Read the reply. The bookmaker confirms the bet with a bet ID, odds and possible win. If the reply says the format is wrong, nothing was staked.
  6. Withdraw. Many operators accept a withdrawal message such as W# followed by the amount, sent from your registered number; the money goes to M-Pesa.

Typical SMS formats

ActionUsual pattern
Single betMatch ID#Pick#Stake (picks: 1, X or 2)
MultibetMatch ID#Pick#Match ID#Pick#...#Stake
JackpotJackpot keyword followed by your picks in order
BalanceA keyword such as BALANCE
WithdrawalW#Amount

The exact keywords differ by operator and change over time. OdiBets and Chezacash publish their SMS commands in their help sections, and Betika uses its shortcode for registration, bonus checks and jackpot games. Read each operator's own guide in our reviews, for example OdiBets SMS betting and Betika SMS.

What SMS betting costs

Bookmaker shortcodes in Kenya are often free to send to or charged at standard rates, but this differs by operator and by network. Check the operator's help page. Stakes and taxes work the same as online: excise is deducted on the deposit and withholding tax from winnings.

Common SMS betting mistakes

  • Sending from a number different from the registered one; the bet will not link to your account.
  • Using an old match ID from a previous day's list.
  • Missing a # or adding spaces, which makes the format invalid.
  • Not waiting for the confirmation before sending the same bet again, which can place it twice.
  • Replying to SMS "offers" from unknown numbers that copy a bookmaker's style. Only trust messages from the official shortcode.

Playing jackpots by SMS

Jackpots are where SMS betting is most popular. Operators that support it let you request the current jackpot games by text and then send your picks in order, usually as a string of 1, X and 2 after a jackpot keyword. Betika, for example, lets players fetch Grand Jackpot games by SMS. Double-check the order of your picks against the match list before sending, because a single shifted pick ruins the whole entry. For analysis before you send, see our jackpot predictions.

Is SMS betting still worth it?

For live betting, cash out, Aviator or casino, you need the app or site. But SMS remains handy for jackpot entries, quick singles when you have no bundle, and withdrawals when the site is slow. Many punters use both: the app at home on Wi-Fi, SMS on the move. The speed of SMS bets makes it easy to bet on impulse, so set a limit before you start. SMS betting, like all betting, is for adults 18+ only. For more ways to bet with little data, see our betting apps page and the M-Pesa betting sites list.

Frequently asked questions

Can I bet without internet in Kenya?

Yes. Some bookmakers accept bets by SMS to a shortcode, and some offer USSD menus. You need a funded account, usually loaded through M-Pesa Pay Bill.

How do I know my SMS bet went through?

The bookmaker replies with a confirmation that includes a bet ID, odds and possible winnings. If you receive an error or no reply, the bet was not placed.

Is SMS betting free?

It depends on the operator and network. Some shortcodes are free, others cost a standard SMS fee. Check the operator's help page.

Can I withdraw winnings by SMS?

Several operators accept a withdrawal message, often in the format W# followed by the amount, sent from your registered number. The money goes to M-Pesa.
