Lotto and Lottery in Kenya

A guide to legal lotto and lottery options in Kenya, how bookmaker number games work, what international draws mean for Kenyans and how to spot scams.

By , Editor, betting tips and bookmaker reviewsUpdated

Lotto in Kenya comes in three forms: the long-running Kenya Charity Sweepstake, number games and lotto products run by licensed bookmakers, and a national lottery that is still being set up under the Gambling Control Act, 2025. There is no single dominant daily lotto brand of the kind some West African countries have. This page explains each option, where to see lotto results, how the odds work and how to avoid the fake lottery messages that circulate on Kenyan phones.

When draw information is available, the feed above lists recent draws from the products we cover, with the date and the drawn numbers. The official result is always the one published by the operator running the draw. If a number in our feed differs from the operator's site, trust the operator.

Betting in Kenya is now regulated by the Gambling Regulatory Authority (GRA), the BCLB's successor under the 2025 Gambling Control Act, and its licensing covers lotteries. Before you play any lotto product, check that the operator shows a current licence number on its site; our list of licensed betting sites is a starting point.

How bookmaker lotto games work

Several Kenyan sportsbooks offer number games alongside football. The format is usually one of these:

  • Fixed-odds number bets. You pick one or more numbers from a range, and the payout for a correct pick is a fixed multiple of your stake. The more numbers you need to match, the higher the multiple.
  • Quick draws. Automated draws every few minutes. They feel like a casino game because they are one: the result is random and the house edge is built into the payouts.
  • Bets on foreign draws. You bet on numbers from a draw such as EuroMillions, Powerball or Mega Millions. You are not entering that lottery; the bookmaker pays you at its own odds if your numbers come up.

Product names, number ranges and odds differ from site to site, so read the rules page of each game before you play.

Powerball, Mega Millions and EuroMillions from Kenya

Many Kenyans search for Powerball jackpots, Mega Millions or EuroMillions results. Official tickets for those lotteries are sold in their home countries. Online "ticket agents" that offer to buy tickets for you from abroad are a risky route, and many offers that reach Kenyan inboxes are simply scams. If you want to play on an international draw, the regulated option is a bet with a licensed Kenyan bookmaker, and you should understand that the prize is set by the bookmaker's odds, not by the overseas jackpot.

Your real chances in lotto

Lotto odds are long, and a lotto calculator shows it quickly. Picking 6 numbers correctly from 49 has 13,983,816 possible combinations, so one line has a 1 in 13,983,816 chance. Matching 2 numbers from a small range is far easier but pays far less. Our odds calculator converts any payout into an implied probability so you can compare a lotto bet with a football bet. A lotto line is entertainment priced like entertainment.

How to play lotto in Kenya step by step

  1. Choose a licensed operator and open its lotto or numbers section.
  2. Read the game rules: number range, how many numbers are drawn, draw times in EAT and payouts.
  3. Deposit through M-Pesa paybill or STK push; excise duty is deducted from deposits.
  4. Pick your numbers and stake, then confirm the ticket and note its ID.
  5. Check the result in your bet history after the draw. Withholding tax is deducted from winnings before payout.

Lottery scams that target Kenyans

  • "You have won" SMS messages for a lottery you never entered, asking for a fee or your M-Pesa PIN. Real lotteries do not charge you to collect a prize.
  • Fake national lottery pages. Until an operator is officially appointed, treat any "Kenya National Lottery" app or page asking for payment with suspicion.
  • Number predictor apps that claim to forecast draws. Draws are random, and these apps are scams.

Lotto is for adults 18+ only. Set a small fixed amount for draws, and if you notice you are chasing losses, use the support listed on our responsible gambling page.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a national lottery in Kenya?

A national lottery is being set up under the Gambling Control Act, 2025. Draft regulations were published and an operator selection is in progress, but it was not yet running at the time of writing.

Is lotto legal in Kenya?

Yes, when it is run by a licensed operator. Lotteries fall under the Gambling Regulatory Authority's licensing. Check that any lotto site shows a current licence number.

Can I buy Powerball or EuroMillions tickets from Kenya?

Official tickets are sold in those countries. Some Kenyan bookmakers let you bet on the outcome of those draws, which is a fixed-odds bet with the bookmaker rather than a lottery ticket.

Where can I see Kenyan lotto results?

On the website or app of the operator that runs the draw. Your own ticket result appears in your bet history after the draw.

Do lotto winnings in Kenya get taxed?

Withholding tax applies to gambling winnings and the operator deducts it before paying out. Check the payout screen for the amount deducted.

Lotto draws are random. Nobody can predict winning numbers, and anyone selling sure numbers is running a scam. 18+.
