How to Bet on Football

A step-by-step guide to placing your first football bet in Kenya, from registration and M-Pesa deposits to reading odds, plus a plain look at Aviator and casino games.

To bet on football in Kenya you open an account with a licensed bookmaker, deposit with M-Pesa, pick a match and market, enter a stake on the betslip and confirm. That is the whole of how to bet; the skill lies in choosing the right market, stake and site. This guide covers each step for beginners, then explains how the casino games that appear next to football on Kenyan sites, such as Aviator and roulette, actually work.

Step 1: choose a licensed bookmaker

Start with an operator that shows a current licence from the Gambling Regulatory Authority (GRA), set up by the Gambling Control Act, 2025 in place of the BCLB. Compare a few on our list of betting sites in Kenya, looking at M-Pesa deposits and withdrawals, the football markets offered, the app and customer care. A local licence matters: if something goes wrong, you have a Kenyan regulator to turn to.

Step 2: register and verify

  1. Sign up on the site, the app or by SMS where the operator supports it, usually with your Safaricom or Airtel number.
  2. Set a strong password and confirm the code sent to your phone.
  3. Complete any identity checks the operator asks for. Betting is for adults 18+ only, and operators can refuse accounts that fail age checks.

Step 3: deposit with M-Pesa

Most Kenyan bookmakers accept M-Pesa in two ways:

  • STK push. Enter the amount on the site, receive a prompt on your phone and enter your M-Pesa PIN.
  • Paybill. M-PESA menu, Lipa na M-PESA, Pay Bill, enter the bookmaker's business number, then the account number (usually your registered phone number), the amount and your PIN.

Airtel Money is accepted by many operators directly or through interoperability; check each site. Excise duty is deducted when the deposit lands, so your balance will be a little lower than the amount sent. Our betting tax guide explains why.

Step 4: read the odds and pick a market

Kenyan sites use decimal odds. Odds of 2.00 return KES 200 for a KES 100 stake, including your stake. Lower odds mean the bookmaker thinks the outcome is more likely. For a first bet, keep to markets you understand:

MarketYou are betting thatGood for beginners?
1X2Home wins, draw, or away winsYes, the simplest
Double chanceOne of two outcomes happensYes, lower odds, lower risk
Over/under 2.5Total goals are above or below 2.5Yes, no need to pick a winner
Correct scoreThe exact final scoreNo, a long shot

Step 5: build and place the bet slip

  1. Tap the price you want. It appears on the betslip.
  2. Choose a single for one match. If you add more matches, the slip becomes a multibet that pays only if every leg wins.
  3. Enter your stake and check the potential win and the tax line.
  4. Confirm. You get a ticket ID on screen and often by SMS.

Our bet slip guide explains every field and how to check the ticket afterwards. Some operators also accept bets by SMS to a shortcode; see our SMS betting sites for how that works.

Step 6: withdraw winnings

Withdraw to M-Pesa from the account menu. Winnings are paid out net of withholding tax, and the operator's withdrawal limits and any M-Pesa charges are shown on the withdrawal screen.

Aviator: how to play and what "how to win" really means

Aviator is a crash game: a multiplier rises from 1.00x and stops at a random point. You place a stake before the round and cash out at any time; if the plane flies away before you cash out, you lose the stake. Most players set an auto cash-out at a low multiplier. There is no way to know when the round will crash. Aviator predictor apps, signal groups and "hacks" are scams that take your money or your account details. Our Aviator guide covers the rules and safer limits.

Roulette, blackjack and lotto in brief

  • Roulette: bet on a number, colour or group; the wheel decides at random, and the zero gives the house its edge.
  • Blackjack: try to beat the dealer's hand without going over 21; basic strategy reduces the house edge but does not remove it.
  • Lotto: pick numbers for a draw; results are random. See our lotto in Kenya page for legal options.

Beginner rules that save money

  • Set a weekly budget before you deposit and stop when it is gone.
  • Prefer singles and short slips over long accumulators.
  • Never borrow, including from mobile loan apps, to bet.
  • Ignore anyone selling sure tips or fixed matches; they are scams.

Frequently asked questions

How do I start betting in Kenya?

Register with a licensed bookmaker using your phone number, deposit by M-Pesa, choose a match and market, enter a stake on the betslip and confirm the bet.

What is the easiest football bet for a beginner?

A single 1X2 or double chance bet on a match you follow. It has one outcome to check and a clear return.

Can I bet by SMS in Kenya?

Several operators accept bets by SMS to a shortcode. The format differs by bookmaker, so check the operator's help page or our SMS betting sites guide.

Is there a trick to winning at Aviator?

No. Each round crashes at a random point. Predictor apps and signal groups claiming otherwise are scams.

How much should I bet as a beginner?

Only an amount you are comfortable losing completely, split into small equal stakes. Many beginners use 1 to 2 percent of their weekly betting budget per bet.
